Ukrainian Tradition. Oil on panel. 4' x 2'
Ukrainians celebrate Ivan Kupala Night, an extraordinary ancient holiday, on the night of July 6-7. It is a pre-Christian celebration of summer and the sun. The rituals are based on ideas of purification, nature with its spirits, and forces like water, fire, and vegetation. One tradition is to float a wreath that girls weave out in the water, and it is strongly recommended for singles only. The direction of the wreath's flow determines the direction from which the future spouse will come.
